Lets look at what the NDP wants.... peacekeeping

The NDP leadership convention is coming up and I ask the question will we allow for this kind of second rate "feel" good policy to destroy our soldiers?

This would mean that Canada's new role in the world would be to put up a pretext for peace and allow the soldiers to suffer the cause of an NDP strategy.

So the NDP would commit Canadian Forces to peacekeeping under UN command and control despite the fact that in doing so our soldiers will not have the appropriate rules of engagement, will not have the proper equipment, will be working beside troops that have little experience and even worse training...........

and will allow for an increase in combat stress and PTSD for these vets as they will be unable to intervene in a crime committed before them....

as proven by all previous UN missions.

The NDP would commit Canadian troops into Sudan (this was written before Southern Sudan became its own country) and the flawed mission in the Congo.
Again looking for peacekeeping in the Israeli conflict... and the UN observers have been ignored or even attacked by both sides.

"Canada's Role in the World
My News Splash (U.n. Extends Mandate Of Congo Peacekeeping Force)
Jack Layton and the New Democrats will:
Provide robust support to the United Nations and its work in conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and global co-operation.
Participate in international efforts to bring peace, justice and stability to the Darfur region of Sudan and to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Re-establish Canada as a leader for global peace and disarmament by renewing efforts to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons, ban cluster bombs, and control trade in small arms and light weapons.
Work with partners for peace and justice in Israel and Palestine, within a framework of respect for UN resolutions and international law. This means recognition of the right of both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peaceful co-existence in viable, independent states with negotiated, agreed-upon borders; no settlements remaining in the Palestinian state; an end to Israeli occupation of Palestinian land; an end to loss of life of innocent civilians; and an international peacekeeping presence."

  1. I agree peacekeeping sucks. I'm glad the Afghan vets put the jack boot to that way of thinking, cause driving around in an all white vehicle with a light blue beret is working from a position of weakness. As far as political parties, they change, don't wrap your identity in any of them. Canada first.

  2. This may not be the current Policy, Paul. I followed your link above and I cannot find the material you've quoted here.

    Following your link, then clicking on "6.0 Leadership on the world stage"

    ... shows a page with much different content than you've quoted above, including this, which starts with peace-making, such as Afghanistan and Bosnia, etc.:

    6.4 Charting a New Course for Canada’s Defence

    ➢ We will give the men and women of the Canadian Forces, who put their lives on the line every day, the best equipment to do the job with, proper support and benefits;

    ➢ We will focus Canada’s military on three main priorities: defending Canada; providing support for peacemaking, peace-building and peacekeeping around the world; and assisting people facing natural catastrophes, including floods, earthquakes, forest fires and other emergencies, both at home and abroad;
